May 29, 2002-Board Meeting

OFFICIAL MINUTES OF BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETINGS

The Cucamonga District Host Lions Club of Rancho Cucamonga, CA held its Board Meeting at the offices of Mindrum Precision Company on May 29, 2002. Meeting was called to order at 6:29 p.m. by President Norm MacKenzie who acted as chairperson, with the following board members in attendance:

  1. Minutes of Business Meeting
    MINUTES: April 24 meeting minutes approved as read.
  2. COMMUNICATIONS:
    • Fundraiser for Kay Fukushima's candidacy for International President, June 23, La Habra Community Center, lobster-steak dinner $35 each.
    • Lions Camp Teresita Pines Annual Open House, Saturday, Sept 7
    • Camp Wilderness for deaf children, asking for donation.
    • Lions Eye Foundation (check for $200 dues written), July 20 BBQ at Pico Rivera Park, $15 each.
  3. REPORTS OF OFFICERS:
    • Pres Norm and VP Scotty attended Oxnard Convention. There were about 400 Lions in attendance. Norm was appointed Foothill Region's Zone A Chairman for next fiscal year (we are in Zone B). Next year's convention is also to be in Oxnard
    • Treasurer's Report available at meeting.
    • Next Trust Fund Report due in July.
  4. REPORTS OF COMMITTEE CHAIRS:
    • Membership Chairman Paul M. requested a vote on the applications of Joe Lyons and Dan Mindrum: The applicant's memberships were approved. They will be inducted at the Installation Dinner, June 12.
  5. UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
    • Orientation Meeting for all new members is to be held in RC Chamber of Commerce office, Wednesday or Thursday , 2nd week of June.
    • President Norm reported that net profit at Villa Del Rey was $310.
    • All ballots for Melvin Jones Award and Lion of the Year are in; results will be announced at the Installation Dinner.
    • Pres. Norm reported that Club ice cream sales at the coming Red Hill Market Place must be delayed until July because of scheduling conflicts.
  6. NEW BUSINESS:
    • Installation Dinner to be held Wednesday, June 12 at a presently unidentified location ( possibly Mimi's Cafe).
    • Lion Jim H. to look into setting a Lions Night at the Quakes' stadium, perhaps Friday, August 2. Pres. Norm to propose s to make it a Lions Foothill Region activity.
    • New Officers are to attend the next Board Meeting, June 26, to prepare to take over leadership of the Club.
    • Late arrival Lion Dick Smithberg announced that he is going to be moving from this area some time before Sept 15.
    • Lion Larry C. to investigate Library of Congress offer to donate books to non-profit organizations.
    • Lion Hector G. to check with his Target store about setting up an Underpriviledged Children Shopping Spree with our Club sponsorship.

  2. Reports of Officers and Committee Chairs:
    • President Lion Norm is to locate a suitable location for the Club's June Installation meeting.
    • A blank "Lion of the Year" plaque was passed to VP Lion Scotty Barclay for engraving with the name of the member who wins the Club vote.
  3. Announcements and Communications:
    • President Norm announced that this month's Board Meeting is to be held on the 5th Wednesday, May 29, because he will be out of town on the normal 4th Wednesday meeting date.
    • Lion Norm is to check out Cask & Cleaver restaurant as a potential future luncheon meeting site.
    • Club is to work an ice cream sales booth at the June 20 Red Hill Market Place.
    • Two Lions Club Banners are to fly in RC from Memorial Day to July 4 at some as yet undisclosed locations.
    • The Annual BBQ Meeting is to be held at the home of Lion Diane Mindrum on Friday, July 19 at 6:30 pm.
  4. Unfinished Business: Trailer Inventory Work Party was not resolved.
  5. New Business: President Norm suggested that our Club sponsor the local Summer American Legion Baseball Team's entry into the Lions Baseball Tournament in Ontario.

May 8, 2002-Evening Meeting

The regular evening meeting of the Cucamonga District Host Lions Club was called to order on May 8, 2002 by Lion President Norm MacKenzie at 6.56 p.m. in the banquet room of the Hometown Buffet Restaurant with those members in attendance as shown on the Attendance Record and Guest Register.

  1. New member, Lion Hector Gonzalez, was inducted by our team consisting of Lions Sam Grasso, Paul Mindrum and Norm MacKenzie. Hector is a single parent of 3 children and a Security Officer for local Target store. Welcome aboard, Hector.

  4. Announcements and Communications:
    • "Thank You" letter from RC Police Department was read.
    • Our Club is to be represented by Lions Norm and Scotty Barclay at District 4- L4 Convention in Oxnard, May 16-19, 2002.
  5. Unfinished Business:
    • One more vote needed for our Melvin Jones recipient.
    • Two more votes needed for our Lion of the Year award.

  7. Program:
    1. Rick Secrist, Baseball Coach for Alta Loma High School, is starting an American Legion summer team, consisting of 18 players from local high schools. After describing the program he asked for financial assistance to buy team uniforms ($1375) and for entrance fees ($150).
    2. Bill Davis, a visually impaired professional webmaster, assisted by his son Jonathan, talked to us about his competitive cycling activities. He is to participate in a SF to LA race, May 13-19, competing with about 2000 non-impaired cyclists. He requested financial help to cover his $2250 expenses for a July 9 race.
    3. Matt Becker, a future Princeton engineering student, presently a senior at Etiwanda High School, told us about the "Battle Box" project in which he and two other students have been engaged since last June. They have independently designed, funded and built a radio controlled , electrically powered "battle robot" which they intend to enter into competitions in San Francisco from May 19-27. Treasurer Lion Diane Mindrum presented him with a $300 check from our Club to support his "Core Robotics Club" activities.

The Cucamonga District Host Lions Club of Rancho Cucamonga, CA held its Board Meeting at the offices of Mindrum Precision Company on April 24, 2002. Meeting was called to order at 6:48 p.m. by President Norm MacKenzie who acted as chairperson, with the following board members in attendance:

    MINUTES: March 27 meeting minutes approved as read.
  2. COMMUNICATIONS: none
  3. REPORTS OF OFFICERS:
    • Secretary was requested to obtain 100% Attendance Award pins for applicable members.
    • Treasurer's Report [available at meeting]
    • Vice President Lion Scotty reported on the April 21 Cabinet/Student Speaker Contest Meeting, which he and the Secretary attended: A girl from Anaheim won the contest; The Past International President Lion Bill Biggs was quoted as saying about membership retention, "Until you know about each of your individual member's lives you won't be able to keep your membership."
    • Lion Paul M. reported that the Trust Fund is slowly climbing back toward its pre-market slump value. A motion that the Trust Fund not be required to pay back the Welfare Fund (for the $-- loan) was approved. Lion Larry C. is to take over responsibility for the Trust Fund.
  4. REPORTS OF COMMITTEE CHAIRS:
    • Information Technology Chairman, Lion Jim P. reported that blanket emails can be sent via the Club Website by addressing [address available at meeting]. Lion Dick S. is to write an article for the 4-L Forum District newsletter regarding our website.
    • Membership Chairman Paul M. requested a vote on the application of Hector Gonzales: The applicant's membership was approved. Hector will be inducted at the next meeting by the Induction Team, with Lion Norm filling in for Lion Jim Hampton.
  5. UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
    • An Orientation Meeting for all new members is to be held in a private home that is to be determined, presided over by President Norm.
    • President Norm is not ready to report on the Villa Del Rey accounting results.
    • Our Melvin Jones representative Lion Paul M. is holding the recently cast ballots for our coming Melvin Jones Award, waiting for the last member's vote (Lion Nagib Bahri).
    • Lion Scotty, who is holding the Lion Of The Year ballots, reported that he needs ballots from three more members.
    • Club ice cream sales at the coming Red Hill Market Place is advocated by our President. A motion to make a trial sales booth run on June 20 was approved. Lion Scotty is to be the chairman.
    • Secretary was requested to make copies of the Club's Constitution/Bylaws for distribution to all members. Lion Larry C. is to Chair a committee to propose revisions to that 1972 document.
  6. NEW BUSINESS:
    • President Norm advocated that the Club sponsor the Etiwanda High School Warrior Robot Engineering Project, with an eye toward establishing Leo activities at the school. A proposal to donate $300 to the project was approved. Lion Norm is to determine to whom the check should be written.

  1. Note: The normal banquet area was vacant when we arrived, but management placed us in one of the main dining areas that was extremely noisy.
  2. Minutes from March 27 Board Meeting were read.
  3. Reports of Officers and Committee Chairs:
    • Treasurer Lion Paul Mindrum commented that the Memorial Trust Fund is slowly regaining its value as its mutual fund's stock price increases.
    • Membership Chairperson Lion Paul Mindrum reported that he has one potential new candidate.
    • Eyeglass Distribution Chairperson Lion Lisa Bailey said she has approximately ten eyeglasses, Lion Paul M. has over 840 packaged and Lion Sam Grasso has box of about 100 on hand.
    • Website/Bulletin Chairperson Lion Jim Peugh announced that many photos have been added to the website in addition to Eyeglass Collection Points.
    • Casino Night Chairperson Lion Scotty said we should get sponsors for rental tables and raffle prizes. We will prepare for the fundraiser over a six-month period, for a date in the Spring of 2003.
  4. Announcements and Communications:
    • The fourth Cabinet Meeting of District 4-L4 is set for 9:00 a.m., Sunday, April 21 at La Habra Community Center, 101 W. La Habra Blvd.
    • District 4-L4 Convention; Oxnard, May 16-19 at Casa Sirena Hotel. Our President and Vice-President are registered to attend.

  6. New Business: Slate of officers for the coming year:
    President-Norm MacKenzie, Vice President-Andy Megaw, Secretary - Lisa Bailey, Treasurer - Diane Mindrum, Membership Chairman - George Bailey, Tail Twister- Dick Smithberg, Lion Tamer - Emile Larcher, Director (3 years) - Scotty Barclay, Director (2 years) - Larry Chavez, Director (1 year) - Jim Hampton.
Program:
Deputy Sheriffs Matthew Yost and Stacy Schneiderwent spoke about the RC Police Department's Explorer program for young people, ages 14-21 years. They currently have about 26 enthusiastic kids in the group.

    MINUTES: February 27 meeting minutes approved as corrected.
  2. COMMUNICATIONS:
    • Various Lions Meeting announcements were read.
    • Lion VP Scotty, in Lion Pres Norm's place, is to attend Foothill Region Student Speaker Contest Thursday, April 4, at 6:30pm, Elks Lodge 1150 W. 4th St., Ontario. All members are requested to attend as a formal Visitation.
    • Lion Claude and his wife Lupe are to represent Club at the Melvin Jones Birthday Celebration Friday, April 5, 2002, at the Orange County Mining Company.
    • Starting Thursday, June 6, and every subsequent Thursday at Red Hill Park until August 29, RC is presenting "Community Marketplace," a combination of what in the past was separately called "Concerts in the Park" and "Farmers' Market." This is a food sales opportunity for the Club.
  3. REPORTS OF OFFICERS:
    • Secretary reported he was unable to locate List of Officers' Duties. Lion Pres. Norm said he will bring one to the next meeting.

  4. REPORTS OF COMMITTEE CHAIRS:
    • Information Technology Chairman, Lion Jim P. reported that Club Website now has Meeting Minutes on a separate page and that photos of current Club activities are to be featured. Eyeglass pickup sites are to be added when information is provided to him.
    • Lion Scotty reported that best Casino Night Fundraiser site is the VFW Hall. We will need uniformed Security Guard. Based on contacts at Villa Del Rey, we will need at least 6 months to prepare this event; start work in July for Spring date.
    • Six Members participated at the bar for the Villa Del Rey Casino Night. Pres Norm does not yet know what the financial take was, but will tabulate it upon his return from China. He turned in $400 to Treasurer, which included $100 seed money. Motion to raffle off an unopened leftover bottle of liquor at each coming regular meeting was approved.
  5. UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
    • Secretary Note: To Monthly Activity Report; add three Membership Excellence certificates received by Lion Norm for three new members.
    • Orientation Meetings for four new members to be set up after Pres Norm returns from China.
  6. NEW BUSINESS:
    • Tentative slate of new officers for next fiscal year: President, Lion Norm; VP, Lion Andy Megaw; Treasurer, Lion Diane M.; Secretary, (?); Lion Tamer, Lion Emile L.; Tail Twister, Lion Dick S.
    • RC Banner Program; 12 locations for total of 145 banners with April 16 application deadline. Motion to buy two banners approved.
    • Pres Norm to investigate sales booths for two Community Marketplace dates.
    • Melvin Jones Award nominations: Lions Diane, Jim H., Larry C and Norm. Ballot, to be made by Lion Dick's wife, to be presented for votes at next two meetings (Secretary to authenticate no vote duplications between the two meetings.)
    • Secretary to obtain Club Constitution/Bylaws from Lions Emile L or Paul Mindrum for change review by Board.
    • Lion Jim H. said that Club's candy machine at Lion Bill Davies' business place must be removed or sold.
    • Recently purchased MD-4/Osaka and "K" Trading Pins passed out to Board Members.

Program:
Angelica Agudo, Field Executive of the Spanish Trails Girls Scouts Council, told us about their activities. The Council consists of 890 troops (12591 girls), that have programs for Daisies (5-6 year olds), Brownies (7-8 year olds) and regular High School age girl scouts.

    • Website Chairman, Lion Jim Peugh, announced that he has added password protection to the Club Roster listing.
    • Casino Night Fundraiser: Lion Scotty Barclay reported that the VFW Hall rental is $----, with a $---- refundable deposit. They have various casino tables for rent.
    • Club Shirts: Lion Jim Hampton had a quantity of shirts for sale to members.
  4. Announcements and Communications:
    • City of Hope 45th Annual Lions Day Tribute, Sunday March 24, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    • Let Lion President Norm if you are planning to attend District 4-L4 Convention in Oxnard, May 16-19, 2002.
    • Club Work Party on Friday 22 March, bartending at Villa Del Rey, to start about 5 p.m.
    • Opportunity Drawing for benefit of Lions for Canine Companions to be held next dinner meeting.
    • City Banner Program to run from Memorial Day to July 4th. Banners cost $150 each ("Good Publicity for Club").
  5. Unfinished Business:
    • Trailer Inventory Work Party, March 6 at 5:30 p.m.; nobody but Lion Claude showed up. Activity must be rescheduled.
  6. New Business:
    • District 4-L4 has requested $50 donation from all clubs for Melvin Jones Banquet: Motion approved.
    • President Norm asked for volunteers for next year's Club Offices and Chairs. Members asked for list of duties for all offices; Secretary to provide list at future meeting. Lion Larry Chavez volunteered to take Trust Fund Chair.
  7. Program:
    Charles Brame, Abe Lincoln historian and "look-alike," gave an interesting cartoon- projection description of Abe Lincoln's character traits. Brame stated that Abe was a prolific writer and that he wrote 50,000 more words than Shakespeare.

    MINUTES: January 23 meeting minutes approved as read.
  2. COMMUNICATIONS:
    • Year 2002-2003 Nomination letters read for Lions Chuck Overbey (District Governor) and Jim North (Vice District Governor)
    • Various Lions Meeting announcements were read, generating discussion about how we can reliably get student speaker candidates in the future.
  3. REPORTS OF OFFICERS:
    • Treasurer's Report [available at meeting]
    • Vice President announced that speaker for March 13 "Ladies Night" meeting is to be Nationally TV-Featured Charles Brame, an Abe Lincoln impersonator. Secretary was asked to locate Award Certificates for program presenters. Lion Larry suggested that Club obtain a camera to memorialize all programs in Club Scrapbook, on Website and for newspaper coverage. Lion Dick to check out camera offered to Club and report at next meeting.
  4. REPORTS OF COMMITTEE CHAIRS:
    • Information Technology Chairman, Lion Jim P. reported on status and plans for Club Website.
    • Visitation Chairman, Lion Jim H., said he and Lion Scotty visited RC Community Club's Speaker Contest. President Norm asked that we all make a formal Visitation to Foothill Zone B Speakers Contest 7pm, Tuesday, March 12 at Lions Center West, Filippi Room.
    • Casino Night Fundraiser site location: Lion Scotty to check on Sweeten Hall, Lion Larry to check on VFW Hall. Lion Dick to check on bus rental to-from Laughlin.
    • Club Shirts: Lion Jim H. said 26 shirts are at embroiderers now and to be at next meeting. Club payment of $400.85 to cover cost of shirts was approved.
    • YMCA Fundraiser Chairperson, Lion Diane, said we've raised $1050 so far.
    • Lion Lisa Bailey is Sunshine Chairperson.

    • Lion Diane, who is educationally mentoring five children, offered to donate $500 to Club if Club will donate $250 to two kids for their grades: Approved.

Jack Lam, RC City Manager, spoke about the open air Regional Shopping Center Project, to be located at Foothill and 15 freeway, with 3 million square feet of store and office space. Working drawings to be completed in about one year. Projected $2 million/year tax income to City and more than 3000 new jobs.

Installation of new member, Shari Megaw, was carried out by the Installation Team: Lion Jim Hampton presented the history of Lions International, Lion Sam Grasso's history of our Club was read by Lion President Norm in Sam's illness absence, and Lion Larry Chavez performed the actual Installation. WELCOME ABOARD LION SHARI.
  2. Minutes of January 23, 2002 Board Meeting were read.
  3. Reports of Committee Chairs:
    • Lion President Norm announced that we could get no candidates for our February 20 Student Speaker Contest. High School officials suggested that we run the contest in January when the student work-load is minimal.
    • Lion Scotty Barclay reported that on our five-member Visitation to the Chino Hills Club last month, Lion Paul Mindrum won their jackpot of $502 and Lion Claude Conner won a $5 drawing. Lion Paul donated $100 to the host club.
  4. Announcements and Communications:
    • City of Hope 45th Annual Lions Day Tribute, Sunday March 24, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    • District 4-L4 Convention in Oxnard, May 16-19, 2002.
    • Lion Chuck Overby is to be nominated for District Governor.
    • Lion Jim North is to be nominated for Vice District Governor.
  5. Unfinished Business:
    • Lion Jim Hampton gave a tentative description of the proposed Club Shirts. Samples to be brought to a future meeting.
  6. New Business:
    • Motion to send entrance fee for Library Telethon was approved. Visiting Lion Paul Shockey offered to participate in their Trivial Pursuits contest representing our Club.
    • Our President Norm received Lions International Membership Growth Awards, Certificates and pin, for his sponsorship of new members.
  7. Program:
    History Professor Sam Stavros of Chaffey College related how President Andrew Jackson became known as "Old Hickory." It was due to his frequent gun duels, in which he was seven times wounded but nevertheless stood, took careful aim, fired and subdued his opponents.
  8. Raffle Drawing: Lion Andy Megaw won $5 and Lion Claude Conner won a stuffed bear commemorating Valentine's Day.

OFFICIAL MINUTES OF BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETINGS

The Cucamonga District Host Lions Club of Rancho Cucamonga, CA held its Board Meeting at the offices of Mindrum Precision Company on January 23, 2002. Meeting was called to order at 6:50 p.m. by President Norm MacKenzie who acted as chairperson, with the following board members in attendance:

  1. Minutes of Business Meeting MINUTES: No meeting was held in December and no minutes were available for the November meeting because Secretary had been absent.
  2. REPORTS OF OFFICERS:
    • Secretary requested $20 meal refund for his representation of our Club at the November District Cabinet meeting; approved.
    • Treasurer's Report Approved as follows: [available at meeting]
    • Vice President announced that speaker for March 13 meeting is to be an Abe Lincoln impersonator and should be Ladies Night.
  3. REPORTS OF COMMITTEE CHAIRS:
    • (Eyesight Chairman Lion Andy Megaw is home after last week's emergency appendectomy.)
    • Membership Chairman requested vote on Shari Megaw application; her membership was approved. She is to be inducted at next meeting. Lion President Norm appointed following Induction Team and activities:
        Lion Jim Hampton, History of Lionism;
        Lion Sam Grasso, Club History;
        Lion Larry Chavez, Inductor.
    • Visitation Chairman reminded that we are to visit Chino Hills Lions tomorrow night; six members plan to attend.

  4. UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
    • Student Speaker Contest changed to Feb. 20 luncheon meeting. Lion Norm to locate three judges for the contest.
    • MD-4 Convention, Feb. 1-3 in Riverside's Holiday Inn Select; Lion President Norm has registration forms.
    • District 4-L4 Convention, May 16-19, Oxnard.
  5. NEW BUSINESS:
    • YMCA Fund Drive Captain, Lion Diane Mindrum, needs 2 assistants to join Lion Jim Hampton and Lion Norm MacKenzie.
    • City of Hope Tile donation of $300 approved, honoring our current President.
    • "After Tax Bash" Fundraiser Co-Chairs appointed; Lions Barclay, Chavez and Smithberg (the latter is to locate a potential site).
    • Lion Jim Hampton to investigate and report on emblem-bearing Club shirts.
    • Lion Paul Mindrum announced that, because of his eyesight problem, he must retire from Chairing Trust Fund and Membership Committees and eyeglass distribution activities.
    • Work party to inventory trailer contents at Mindrum Precision to be addressed at next Regular Meeting.

    • Lion Scotty Barclay announced that today's program speaker, Inam Kauser, has donated a check for $100 to our Club.

    • MD-4 Convention to be in Riverside, February 1 thru 3. See President Norm for applications.
    • Our February 13 Evening Meeting to be 6:30pm at Hometown Buffet.

    • Volunteer needed to be our YMCA Chairperson. Lead-off meeting to be in February
    • David Dryer to speak at the Red Hill Country Club, noon meeting on Thursday, February 21; cost , $20.
    • Lion Sam Grasso is to be a speaker at the Friends of the Airport meeting in March.

Program:
Inam Kauser, leader of the Baitul Hameed Mosque in Chino, spoke to us about Islam in the United States, explaining that the name means "peace" in Arabic. He pointed out that in 1984 to 1990 while living in NY State, he had close contact with a local Lions Club, assisting a member in his political candidacy. At the close of the talk Mr. Kauser invited our Club to visit his mosque.

    • Lion President Norm reported to Eyesight Chairman, Lion Andy Megaw, that a lady, recently blinded from diabetes, called for our assistance. She, too, learned of our existence from our Foothill Blvd sign.
    • Our President said that two college-aged persons have indicated interest in our Club and may attend our next meeting.
    • Student Speaker Contest to be held at our February 20 luncheon meeting.
    • Lion Jim Hampton said our next Visitation to be to Chino Hills Lions 6:30 pm, Thursday, January 24 (day after our Board Meeting).
    • Lion Jim Peugh announced that our Club's temporary website is in operation.
  3. Officers Reports:
    • Treasurer received $40 from Tail Twister's twisting of those present.

Meeting Attendees provided our program:

Guest Lion Paul Shockey and his wife, Lion Sue, talked about their respective clubs, Mountain Lake Park Lions (65 members) and Deep Creek Lake Lions (54 members), both of which exist in a Maryland county of some 30,000 population.

Lion Sam Grasso made some historical comments about Rancho Cucamonga for the benefit of our younger members and our out-of-state guests.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:19 pm.
